Ford's Iconic Focus ST Disappears From European Roads
Ford's popular compact performance hatchback, the Focus ST, is set to disappear from European roads. The last Focus ST rolled off the production line in Germany last month, marking the end of an era for Ford's hot hatch lineup. Meanwhile, Hyundai and Kia are poised to fill the gap left by Ford's departure.
Ford will cease all Focus production, including the ST variant, by November. This move signals the end of Ford's traditional passenger car offerings in Europe, leaving the company with only SUVs in this category. The Focus ST's discontinuation comes despite a minor facelift in 2022 to keep it competitive with rivals.
The final Focus ST, finished in red, was produced at the Saarlouis plant on September 26. It was a fourth-generation model, first introduced in 2002 as the ST170. Throughout its lifespan, the Focus ST has been a staple in the compact performance hatchback segment, offering a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder petrol engine with 276 horsepower and a six-speed manual transmission.
Hyundai and Kia, with their higher market share in Europe, are well-positioned to take advantage of Ford's exit. Both brands offer competitive models in the compact performance hatchback segment, potentially filling the void left by the Focus ST.
The departure of the Ford Focus ST leaves a significant gap in the European compact performance hatchback market. While Ford focuses on SUVs, Hyundai and Kia are ready to step in, offering competitive alternatives to fill the void. The final Focus ST, a testament to Ford's hot hatch legacy, will be remembered for its performance and driving experience.
