French Court to Question Russian Tanker Captain in Sanction-Evasion Case
A French court will question the Chinese captain of the Russian tanker Boracay early in February. The vessel, part of Russia's sanction-busting 'shadow fleet', was intercepted off France while carrying oil to India. The captain and first mate were detained for refusing to cooperate with authorities.
The Boracay left Russia on September 20, bound for India. However, it was intercepted off France and blacklisted by the EU. French military personnel remained on board the tanker as of Thursday. The captain is set to appear in court in February, while the first mate has been released. French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Europe to increase pressure on Russia's shadow fleet, estimated to include up to 1,000 ships and tens of billions of euros of Russia's budget.
The Boracay, positioned off Denmark during mysterious drone flights last month, is now at the centre of a legal process. The court's interrogation of the captain in February may provide further insight into Russia's sanction-busting activities.
