From BMW Engineer to ALPINA Boss: Andreas Bovensiepen's Role in the Iconic Z8
Andreas Bovensiepen, now leading ALPINA, previously worked as an engineer for BMW. His tenure saw the birth of the iconic BMW Z8, a project championed by Wolfgang Reitzle, then BMW's head of development.
The Z8's journey began with an abandoned 5 Series convertible project. Reitzle, a fan of the E39 M5, envisioned a sports car using its running gear. However, BMW accountants had reservations about the costs. Despite this, the project progressed with relatively low development and tooling costs.
Initially, the Z8 featured a 4.4-liter V8 engine producing around 286 horsepower. Later, it was upgraded to the 4.9-liter S62 V8 from the E39 M5, boosting power to 400 horsepower. The Z8's aluminum space frame, though new and expensive, contributed to its sleek design and performance. Notably, the Z8 was developed as a BMW AG project, not a BMW M project.
The BMW Z8, thanks to Reitzle's persistence and Bovensiepen's engineering prowess, overcame initial cost concerns to become a reality. Its powerful engine, innovative frame, and sleek design made it a standout sports car.
