Germany to Arm Army, Police with Drone-Shooting Capabilities After Munich Airport Shutdown

Bavarian state premier Markus Soeder has urged for immediate drone shooting capabilities for both the army and police. The German government is set to allow the army to down drones if necessary, with the law change expected to pass on Wednesday. Recent drone incidents across Europe, including Munich airport's closure, have raised alarm bells.

Munich airport shut down its airspace on Thursday night due to multiple drone sightings, disrupting over 30 flights and nearly 3,000 passengers. The cause of the unexplained drone exercises remains unknown. This incident follows a string of airport suspensions in Denmark, Norway, Poland, Romania, Estonia, and Munich due to unidentified drones. Germany and Denmark have raised high alerts in response to these incursions, including over military and industrial sites.

EU heads of state met in Copenhagen to discuss bolstering the bloc's defences with the establishment of a 'drone wall'. The United States is sending anti-drone defences to Denmark. Meanwhile, Romania and Estonia have accused Russia of involvement in the drone incidents. The drone sightings have sparked fears that Russia's assault on Ukraine could escalate and spill over Europe's borders.

Munich airport resumed normal flight operations on Friday morning, with affected passengers rebooked and cancelled flights rescheduled. As the German government moves to grant the army drone shooting capabilities, Europe remains vigilant against potential threats from drone incursions.
