Germany Unveils Drone Defense Strategy: International Partnerships, Military Aid, and Tech Hub

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has outlined a comprehensive strategy to counter the growing threat of drone attacks. He believes bundling technical expertise and financial resources is crucial to tackle this issue, which poses risks to critical infrastructures, civilians, and major events.

Dobrindt announced a significant step in this direction: a drone defense research project in partnership with Israel. While the specific Israeli partner was not named, this collaboration signals a commitment to sharing knowledge and resources to combat the drone threat.

Dobrindt also proposed allowing the German Armed Forces to assist police in drone defense operations. This move, part of the Air Security Act, aims to leverage the military's expertise in protecting against aerial threats. However, the deployment of the armed forces domestically for such purposes remains a contentious issue.

Acknowledging the limitations of current technology, Dobrindt stressed the need for continuous technological improvement. To this end, he plans to establish a German drone competence center involving the federal government, states, and the German Armed Forces. This center would focus on developing and testing new drone defense technologies.

Dobrindt's strategy, if implemented, would significantly bolster Germany's drone defense capabilities. Through international cooperation, enhanced domestic coordination, and continuous technological advancement, the country aims to effectively counter the drone threat and protect its citizens and critical infrastructure.
