Germany's Merz Warns of Europe's Global Standing as First 'Exascale' Supercomputer Launches

Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed concern about Europe's global standing, while welcoming signs of renewed European unity. Meanwhile, Europe's first 'Exascale' supercomputer, Jupiter, has been launched in Germany, aiming to boost the continent's capabilities in artificial intelligence and climate prediction.

Merz, in a recent address, highlighted Germany's global responsibility and the need for Europe to gain more leverage in international affairs. He noted that Europe's dependence on American assistance, particularly in pressuring Russia, has limited its influence.

The launch of Jupiter, Europe's most powerful supercomputer to date, is expected to help close the gap in artificial intelligence with other global powers. Capable of performing a quintillion calculations per second, it is driven by 24,000 Nvidia chips and is a significant step forward for European technological independence.

In other news, the German federal government has finalized its budget for 2025. The Budget Committee of the Bundestag has approved a spending plan of €502.5 billion, with significant investments in infrastructure, digitalization, and security. This includes a noticeable increase in funding for federal highways and defense, aiming to modernize and secure key sectors. The full Bundestag is set to vote on this budget during its session starting on September 16.

The 2025 budget includes investments of €62.7 billion and new debt of nearly €82 billion, which could exceed €140 billion with additional credits. Despite refraining from promising further military engagement for Ukraine if peace is reached, Merz emphasized Germany's commitment to European unity and global responsibility, with the launch of Jupiter being a testament to this commitment.
