In a significant development for the Czech Republic's nuclear power sector, Doosan Škoda Power has been awarded the contract for the delivery of new generators for the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant. The company, based in Pilsen, was chosen by the CEZ Group as the supplier for the new generators for the two Temelín units.

This upgrade project is one of the key initiatives for modernizing and ensuring the long-term operation of the country's nuclear power plants. The operator launched an open tender in 2023 for the replacement of the generators, marking the largest procurement since the commissioning of Czechia's nuclear fleet.

The generators for the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant are linked to one high-pressure and three low-pressure turbine sections. They stretch an impressive 65 meters (213 feet) in length and weigh over 2,000 tons. Currently, these generators are responsible for delivering a nominal 1,086 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the Czech grid.

Doosan Škoda Power's selection for this project is not just a business milestone but a symbolic continuation of its legacy. The original Temelín turbine sets were built by Škoda Plzeň, its predecessor. Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of the power service business group of Doosan Enerbility, stated that they are building on their long-standing cooperation in turbine delivery and service support for Temelín.

The upgrade is considered the largest modernization project in the history of the country's nuclear operations. It is also the largest investment ever made in the history of Czech nuclear plant operations. The new turbine-generator sets are unique on a European scale, featuring blade tip speeds that exceed twice the speed of sound.

The upgrade is set to take place during planned outages in 2029 and 2030. The replacement of the generators is expected to have minimal impact on Temelín's planned outage schedule. The agreement with Doosan Škoda Power includes a 15-year service commitment for the newly installed equipment.

Since the commissioning of the nuclear units, the output has been increased by a total of 500 MWe. The new generators for the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant are among the largest in Europe. The upgrade project is a significant step towards ensuring the continued reliability and efficiency of the Czech Republic's nuclear power plants, contributing to the country's energy security and sustainable development.
