GM's Software Chief Mike Abbott Steps Down Due to Health Reasons
Mike Abbott, General Motors' executive vice president of software and services, is stepping down due to health reasons. Abbott, who joined GM from Apple last May, led the company's software design efforts and recruited tech executives to support its software initiatives.
Abbott's departure comes as GM is expanding its software capabilities. He spearheaded efforts to integrate conversational AI technology into millions of vehicles through a partnership with Google Cloud. GM is developing software-defined vehicles that can receive regular over-the-air updates, enhancing connectivity and features.
Abbott will continue to advise GM as his health allows. Baris Cetinok has been named interim head of software and services, taking over from Abbott. GM is not specifying the current interim leader of the department.
Abbott's leadership has been instrumental in GM's software development, including the recruitment of tech talent and the integration of conversational AI technology. His departure due to health reasons is a significant change for GM, which is continuing its software efforts under interim leadership.
