Google acknowledges Pixel 7a battery bulging problem, provides complimentary fixes, and compensates in certain regions
Google Confirms Battery Swelling Issue Affecting Some Pixel 7a Units
Google has acknowledged a battery swelling problem in some Pixel 7a devices, which may cause noticeable puffiness, back cover bulging, and charging or battery drain issues. In a support document, the tech company advised that certain phones may exhibit these symptoms.
To address this issue, Google has launched an extended repair program offering free battery replacements or alternative compensation. However, eligibility depends on your device's condition, location, and warranty status.
The problem appears to be battery-related, leading to visible physical changes in the phone and potential operational problems. Google has detailed the following possible symptoms:
- Battery bulging or a phone looking thicker than usual
- The back cover pushing out or coming loose
- Faster battery drain or charging failures
These issues can impact the device's functionality and represent a potential safety concern.
For eligible devices, users can receive one-time free battery replacement. Factors such as water, sharp object, or drop damage may affect eligibility. If the screen or back glass is cracked, additional charges may apply for separate repair costs.
Currently, battery replacements are available in countries like the United States, India, Canada, the UK, Germany, Japan, and Singapore. Both walk-in and mail-in repair options are offered in these regions.
In regions where repair services are not available, Google offers cash or discount alternatives. Out-of-warranty users will receive $200 cash or a $300 discount on a new Pixel phone, while under-warranty users will be given $456 cash. These options do not apply to users in the United States and India, where both mail-in and walk-in repairs are available. Once an option is chosen, it cannot be changed.
Google emphasized that battery replacement does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the Pixel 7a. The warranty expiration date remains the same, regardless of the battery replacement.
Users who suspect their device may be affected by this battery swelling issue are advised to contact Google support for further assistance. Only devices with verifiable battery swelling or charging issues are eligible for the free battery replacement program.
