Google amplifies AI capabilities on smartphones in an effort to outperform Apple devices.
Google is set to launch its new Pixel 10 series, aiming to make a significant impact in the smartphone market and challenge Apple's dominance. The new lineup, which is scheduled to debut just ahead of the anticipated launch of new iPhones, promises to bring innovative features and AI integration to the forefront.
The Pixel 10 series will feature a range of AI-powered functions, including real-time translation during calls and a Camera Coach for photo composition. Google is deeply integrating its AI software, Gemini, into its own Pixel devices and Android-operated smartphones from other providers. The integrated generative AI in the cameras of the Pixel 10 series was developed by Google, utilizing their Gemini AI models to enhance photo taking, real-time coaching, and conversational photo editing features.
One of the standout models in the Pixel 10 series is the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, a foldable phone that offers enhanced dust protection and the unique ability to unfold into a compact tablet. This device also boasts a feature that allows simultaneous display of the camera view and recent gallery on the screen while taking photos, providing a seamless photography experience.
In the premium, high-end Pro models of the Pixel 10 series, generative AI is integrated directly into the camera, creating artificial details at high zoom levels. The entry-level model of the Pixel 10 series includes a telephoto camera, which is unusual in this price range.
Google's approach to Pixel phones has been to showcase the capabilities of the Android system rather than focusing on mass-market production. Previous models of Pixel phones have had a low market share, partly due to Google not wanting to disrupt its Android partners' business. However, with the new Pixel 10 series, Google is launching an AI offensive against Apple.
Meanwhile, Apple has struggled with AI integration, postponing the release of a new version of Siri until next year. Apple has introduced individual AI features for photos and text editing over the years, but not a comprehensive AI integration like Google's Gemini.
In addition, Google is set to launch a new smartwatch, the Pixel 4, under the acquired Fitbit brand. The watch will offer health recommendations, further expanding Google's AI-powered offerings.
With the Pixel 10 series, Google is poised to make a significant impact in the smartphone market. The innovative features, AI integration, and unique designs could see significant growth for the Pixel brand. Only time will tell if the Pixel 10 series will be the game-changer Google is hoping for.
