Google and Google Cloud collaborate to progress private identity technology

Google Cloud has announced a strategic collaboration with Self, a zero-knowledge (ZK) identity protocol, to boost the adoption of privacy-preserving AI infrastructure and Web3 tools. This partnership aims to promote decentralized identity systems that allow users to verify personal characteristics without sharing sensitive data.

Extensive Integration and Reach

Self's protocol, which supports over 8 million users and accommodates more than a billion biometric passport holders across 129 countries, is the only fully audited ZK-based identity protocol operational across both iOS and Android platforms. The protocol facilitates both offchain and onchain attestations, with onchain attestations occurring on the Celo blockchain, a platform Google Cloud has been a longtime partner since 2018, running a validator on the blockchain.

Leveraging Zero-Knowledge Proof Technology

Self employs zero-knowledge proof (ZK) cryptography, specifically zk-SNARKs, to enable users to confirm attributes while keeping the underlying data private. This means that neither the developers of the protocol nor external parties can access user data, eliminating the risk of data leaks. By using ZKPs, Self ensures that personal information is neither stored externally nor exposed, providing a secure environment for users to verify their identities without compromising privacy.

Driving Adoption of Privacy-Preserving AI and Web3 Tools

The collaboration between Self and Google Cloud leverages Google Cloud's Web3 developer tools and infrastructure to integrate Self's ZK identity technology, enhancing privacy and security in the decentralized internet. Google Cloud plans to integrate Self's zero-knowledge proof technology into several key offerings, including the Web3 Portal and Google Cloud's Testnet Faucet.

The partnership between Self and Google Cloud marks a significant step toward making private, verifiable digital identity a standard feature of Web3 ecosystems. Self's co-founders express pride in the protocol's rapid advancement and its distinction from competitors. The collaboration reflects a broader industry movement toward secure, decentralized identity systems that can scale globally.
