Google Pay update brings enhanced shopping incentives for Chrome users

Google Pay has recently updated its autofill shopping experience in Chrome, aiming to make online shopping more convenient, transparent, and rewarding.

The key new features include:

  1. Reward details for over 100 credit cards in the U.S.: When autofilling payment information during checkout, users will now see detailed reward benefits for a much larger set of credit cards. This helps them easily identify which card offers the best points, miles, or cashback for a specific purchase.
  2. Expanded Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options integrated directly into Chrome's autofill: U.S. shoppers can now select BNPL payment plans from Affirm and Zip with just a few clicks when autofilling card details, without needing to visit separate BNPL sites. Support for Klarna, Afterpay, and additional BNPL providers is planned for the near future.

Google is also piloting a simple and transparent global money transfer feature through Google Wallet online and Google Search. This feature allows users to view exchange rate and fee information upfront from remittance providers like Ria Money Transfer, Xe, and Wise, with Stripe handling the actual transfers initially between the U.S. and countries such as India, Brazil, Mexico, and the Philippines.

The updates are not limited to specific credit cards but extend support to over 100 credit cards in the U.S. Google has previously included Affirm and Zip in its BNPL options, and Klarna has recently joined this list, available in select Android apps and websites that support Google Pay.

This test is currently limited to these specific countries but may expand to other countries in the future. The autofill feature rolling out in Chrome aims to make it easier for shoppers to quickly tap through without having to fiddle with menus.

Users will now be able to understand the exchange rate during global money transfers, and shoppers will have to select the BNPL later option when checking out online and choose their preferred third-party provider. Google Pay's autofill feature will soon support "buy now, pay later" options for various services beyond Affirm, Zip, Klarna, and Afterpay.
