Google Removes Pro-China Influence Sites: 'GlassBridge' Network Exposed
A network of four PR firms, operating under the name GlassBridge, has been conducting pro-China influence operations online since at least 2022. These firms, posing as independent outlets, publish content supporting China's territorial claims, criticizing Taiwan, and attacking regime critics. Google has removed hundreds of domains associated with these operations from its search and news indexes.
The GlassBridge network consists of four standalone digital PR firms: Shanghai Haixun Technology, Shenzhen Haimai Yunxiang Media, Shenzhen Bowen Media, and an unknown company tracked as DurinBridge. These firms operate in a coordinated manner, suggesting some form of cooperation, and are linked to two newswire services, Times Newswire and World Newswire. They host a combined total of over 1,000 inauthentic news sites, reposting content from Chinese state media and likely commissioned articles from clients.
The content published by these firms covers a range of topics, including China's territorial claims, issues surrounding Taiwan, the COVID-19 pandemic, and personal attacks on critics of the regime. The firms target audiences in dozens of countries outside of China, aiming to push a pro-Chinese narrative and create the illusion of mass consensus.
The GlassBridge network's influence operations have been active since at least 2022, with Google taking action by removing hundreds of domains associated with these operations from its search and news indexes. Despite the coordinated efforts of these firms, there is no publicly available, reliable evidence supporting the existence of a global propagandist network named GlassBridge or specific individuals or institutions operating or controlling it since 2022.
