Google & Stripe Unveil New Shopping & Payment Tools for AI Purchases
Google and Stripe have unveiled new shopping and payment tools for AI-related purchases. These innovations aim to streamline transactions between AI shopping agents and merchants.
AI shopping agents are emerging as a significant ecommerce sales channel. To facilitate these purchases, Stripe has launched the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). ACP uses Shared Payment Tokens to securely pass payment details from AI agents to merchants, without exposing shopper credentials.
ACP is now integrated into Stripe's Instant Checkout in ChatGPT. This allows shoppers to complete purchases without leaving the chat, enhancing user experience. Meanwhile, Google has introduced the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2). AP2 employs tamper-proof, cryptographically-signed digital mandates with verifiable credentials to authenticate and validate AI-led transactions.
Companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, and OpenAI are at the forefront of developing AI for e-commerce transactions. OpenAI has already announced direct shopping via ChatGPT, while Amazon and Google are using AI-powered systems for personalized shopping experiences.
The introduction of ACP and AP2 promises secure and seamless AI-led shopping experiences. As AI shopping agents grow in popularity, they could potentially create intense competition among merchants and solve latent demand by identifying products that shoppers might have otherwise missed. However, merchants will need to prove reliability, value, and transparency to succeed in this new environment.
