AI Mode in Google Search Comes to Germany and Europe - Google's AI Mode Expands to 40+ Countries, Stirring Traffic Concerns

Google has rolled out its AI mode in over 40 countries, causing concern among publishers and companies relying on Google links for traffic. The new feature, introduced in Germany in March 2025 and expanded to the U.S. and other countries in August, uses Gemini Pro 2.5 AI for quick, accurate responses.

AI mode allows users to chat with search results, providing detailed answers to complex queries. Instead of conventional link lists, AI mode displays a comprehensive response, often with sources cited in footnotes. Google representatives assure that high-quality sources will continue to receive clicks, but marketers worry about decreased traffic.

The AI mode expansion follows the introduction of AI overviews in Germany in March. These summaries provide an 'AI overview' of certain topics alongside search results. Google has now enabled AI mode in countries like Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Poland, Thailand, and Vietnam, allowing users to ask more specific questions, such as weekend plans in Edinburgh.

Google's AI mode, powered by Gemini Pro 2.5, offers detailed, conversational search results. While it raises concerns about traffic for publishers and companies, Google maintains that high-quality sources will remain visible. The feature is now available in over 40 countries, transforming the way users interact with search engines.
