Google's AI Video Generator Debuts on a Smartphone, But It's Not a Google Pixel Model
Check out the latest AI video-generating model from Google, known as Veo 2! Unlike other models, Veo 2 requires a Gemini subscription or Google One AI Premium for access, which also provides Whisk, an image animation tool.
You might expect Google to release Veo 2 first for their Pixel smartphones, considering their usual procedure. However, this time around, the first to experience the feature for free aren't Pixel owners, but luckily, you can buy an Honor 400 or 400 Pro instead!
According to The Verge, Honor phone users can use Veo 2 for free through the Gallery app for the initial two months. Unlike Whisk, users can animate their own images, not just those created with Whisk.
The Verge journalist, Dominic Preston, showcases Veo 2 in action on an Honor phone. For example, they animated a photo of Feeder's Grant Nicholas, making it seem like a low-res clip of the musician playing live. Although the clips have been converted to GIFs, they manage to impress with clear and simple subjects, like their pet cat. However, Veo 2 struggled with more complex images, such as a vintage car or a bunch of tomatoes. It rotated the car awkwardly or generated a translucent hand picking up tomatoes.
Honor has set limits on daily video generations to 20, with plans for a subscription service in the future. While the specifics are still unclear, it's hard to discern a compelling reason for most individuals to regularly utilize this feature beyond a fun party trick.
Nevertheless, it's interesting to see Google partnering with Honor to test new features and expand AI technology reach in regions outside the U.S. This move could be a strategic choice to gain more influence in markets where Honor phones hold significance or establish exciting collaborations between the two companies.
- When is Veo 2 on Pixel? It appears Google has chosen to release Veo 2 initially for Honor smartphones, rather than its own Pixel series.
- In the realm of tech and gadgets, the latest development is Google's Veo 2, currently available on Honor phones, showcasing a blend of artificial-intelligence and image animation technology.
