Grasping the concept of online identity management

In the latest episode of the IT Pro Podcast, Rory delves into the pressing issue of identity attacks and digital identities with Art Gilliland, CEO at cybersecurity firm Delinea.

The discussion revolves around the growing concern of machine identity attacks, which are expected to be a significant concern for security leaders by 2025. Adversaries are increasingly focusing on the weakest links in security infrastructure, and with the rise of AI and AI agents, businesses now have to handle potentially thousands of AI agent identities across MCP and API endpoints.

The structural imbalance in security favours the adversary, as they have an inherent advantage. This is further compounded by the fact that infrastructure and security have different priorities, leading to potential weaknesses. However, AI is expected to play a crucial role in identity-related security issues.

AI can help in detecting potential breaches related to identities by identifying leading indicators. It can verify identities contextually and block suspicious behaviour in real time, integrating zero trust principles, adaptive authentication, and behavioural threat detection.

Despite these advancements, IT leaders are currently hesitant to trust AI agents. The authenticated identity of an entity can cause significant damage if compromised, and businesses need to address the complexities of identity management in cybersecurity.

Companies can do this by implementing centralized and flexible identity and access management solutions with strong authentication (such as Multi-Factor Authentication), continuous risk assessment, delegated administration, and detailed monitoring and auditing of access activities to ensure compliance and minimize risks of unauthorized access.
