Green Aero Raises $1.6M to Fuel India's Aerospace Propulsion Revolution

Green Aero, a deeptech startup incubated at IIT Delhi, has raised $1.6 million in a seed funding round. The funding round was led by pi Ventures with participation from Antler. The startup aims to make India self-reliant in aerospace propulsion, a sector where India has historically relied on imported turbine engines for high-performance drones, aircraft, and naval vessels.

The funding will be used to establish an in-house testing facility, accelerate R&D, and expand engineering and operations teams. This will support Green Aero's development of advanced propulsion systems for defence and hydrogen-powered civil aviation. The startup's founder, Prithwish Kundu, a former research scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, leads this ambitious project.

Green Aero recently test-fired The Blue Dragon, India's first hydrogen-based aero engine core. The startup plans to launch its first small-category engine platform within 12 months. Green Aero seeks to fill the strategic gap in India's aerospace propulsion by developing proprietary propulsion platforms for aerospace and maritime applications. It collaborates with institutions such as H2B2 Electrolyse Technologies and GR Promotor Group, as well as companies like Pratt & Whitney Canada, to develop propulsion systems for military and civilian hydrogen aviation, focusing on hydrogen combustion technology for turboprop engines under projects like Hyades.

With the successful test-firing of The Blue Dragon and plans to launch its first engine platform within a year, Green Aero is poised to revolutionize India's aerospace propulsion sector. The recent funding will fuel its mission to develop advanced propulsion systems for defence and hydrogen-powered civil aviation, making India self-reliant in this critical area.
