Hackers infiltrate and compromises Animoca Brands' X account, causing a security breach.

In a series of recent attacks, profiles on social media platforms have been targeted, with streaming platform Kick, AI assistant Cursor, World (formerly Worldcoin) co-founder Alex Blania, meme coin Brett, SocialFi app The Arena, and most recently, Animoca Brands' chairman Yat Siu, falling victim.

The hack on Yat Siu's account, which occurred on December 26, 2024, resulted in the promotion of a fraudulent token. On-chain detective ZachXBT initially reported the breach. By the time of writing, the posts made by the hackers from Siu's account have been removed.

The fake token promoted by the hackers originated from the same address as in several previous incidents. This is a common tactic used in such attacks, where compromised accounts are utilised to disseminate false information about cryptocurrency investments or other scams.

The attacks on social media accounts, such as those of Yat Siu and rapper Wiz Khalifa in November, typically involve sophisticated tactics. These include phishing and spear-phishing, social media impersonation, AI-powered phishing, deepfake voice and deepfake images, malvertising and SEO poisoning, and the spread of malware and ransomware.

To prevent such incidents, it is crucial to implement robust security measures. These include multi-factor authentication, regular password updates, and extensive user training on recognising phishing attempts. Users are also urged to stay vigilant and not engage with compromised accounts.

It is essential to note that no official token or NFT launch is associated with Animoca Brands. Therefore, users should exercise caution when encountering any promotions or offers related to the company on social media platforms.

In light of these incidents, it is clear that vigilance and security are crucial in the digital age. Users must remain cautious and informed to protect themselves from such malicious activities.

Despite the latest hack on Animoca Brands' chairman Yat Siu's account, which promoted a fraudulent NFT, cybersecurity concerns persist in the digital realm. To combat these threats, it is vital to employ technology solutions like multi-factor authentication and user training in identifying phishing tactics.
