The city of Hamburg has a new icon, and it's made entirely of LEGO bricks. A towering LEGO giraffe, weighing over 1,200 kilograms and standing at 5.90 meters high, has taken residence on the Elbe river promenade in the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier. This colossal creation, now the official mascot of the LEGO Discovery Centre, symbolizes creativity and diversity, as intended by its creators.

The LEGO giraffe's journey began in the LEGO factory in Kladno, a town in the Czech Republic. Marcel Maier, a model builder who usually works at LEGO Land in Günzburg, Bavaria, led the construction. Maier, building his first LEGO giraffe, was supported by teams from Germany and the UK.

The LEGO giraffe is crafted from an impressive 46,240 original LEGO bricks. Its construction involved detailed design and planning, structural engineering, brick sorting and preparation, modular building, assembly, quality control, and a strict timeline to complete the project in just three months.

The LEGO Discovery Centre, Hamburg's first of its kind in Germany, opened approximately six weeks ago. Miriam Wolframm, General Manager of the LEGO Discovery Centre Hamburg, believes the LEGO giraffe inspires creative play and diversity. The Centre invites children aged two to twelve to play, learn, and be creative in twelve experience areas.

Adult events are planned at the LEGO Discovery Centre from September. The Centre also hosted a short sightseeing tour of the city for the LEGO giraffe before it found its permanent home. The giraffe lights up in several colours, adding a vibrant touch to Hamburg's skyline.
