Helicopter dismantles upper section of telecommunications tower in Schwerin

On August 19, 2025, the dismantling process of the top section of the Schwerin Broadcasting Tower, a well-known city landmark, began by helicopter. The exact method used, helicopter model, and the new tower height after removal are yet to be officially announced.

Typically, dismantling the top section of a tall broadcast tower by helicopter involves using a heavy-lift helicopter to carefully detach and lift the upper section piece by piece to the ground. Specialized crews guide the hoisted components and ensure safe removal while maintaining stability of the remaining structure. Precision flight maneuvering is required around the tower to avoid damage, and the process usually occurs over several days depending on weather and tower design.

Deutsche Funkturm GmbH, the owner of the Schwerin Broadcasting Tower, has decided to dismantle the GFK-Zylinder, the red-and-white striped top section of the tower, which is no longer needed for technical purposes. The approval process for the dismantling of the GFK-Zylinder was carried out in close coordination with the State Office for Culture and Heritage Preservation.

The Schwerin Broadcasting Tower, which stands at 125.68 meters tall, will stand at a height of 116 meters after the dismantling of the GFK-Zylinder. The current top section of the tower consists of two parts: a steel mast 11.04 meters long and the GFK-Zylinder top section, approximately 9.68 meters long.

The dismantling works are not expected to disrupt media or communication supplies, as the radio services previously housed in the GFK-Zylinder now transmit from a nearby transmission mast. The Schwerin Broadcasting Tower remains an essential part of the radio infrastructure for services such as directional and mobile radio, making it one of the most important radio sites in the region.

Deutsche Funkturm, a company that builds and operates infrastructure for German mobile network providers, broadcasting stations, and other institutions, operates a portfolio of over 36,200 radio sites, including Germany's major broadcasting towers. The dismantling of the top section will be carried out with the help of a helicopter and is weather-dependent, scheduled for mid-August.

For precise details about the dismantling operation, including the exact method used, helicopter model, or the new tower height after removal, it is recommended to consult official announcements from Deutsche Funkturm GmbH or related local news outlets active closer to or after the date.

  1. The dismantling of the Schwerin Broadcasting Tower's GFK-Zylinder, which houses the tower's radio services no longer needed for technical purposes, will be facilitated by a heavy-lift helicopter, such as those often used in the industry for delicate technology-driven tasks in the field of finance and construction.
  2. Post the dismantling of the GFK-Zylinder, the Schwerin Broadcasting Tower will still stand tall at 116 meters, revealing a glimpse into the intersection of technology, finance, and the industry, as the remaining structure continues to serve as an essential part of the region's radio infrastructure.
