"In a daring decision, Battlefield 6 forgoes ray tracing - understanding the advantages this choice brings"
In a bold move for the AAA gaming industry, the studio responsible for Battlefield 6, DICE, has decided not to implement 'poki games' at launch or in the foreseeable future. This decision was made by Christian Buhl, Studio Technical Director at the game's developer, Ripple Effect.
The focus of Battlefield 6, according to Buhl, is on performance for gamers using midrange to budget rigs. The game will have over 600 different settings, allowing players to tailor their gaming experience to their specific hardware. 'Games' related options will not be among these settings.
Maintaining high, stable frame rates is crucial in games like Battlefield 6, especially for those who own gaming monitors with higher refresh rates. The notion that only the latest hardware can handle AAA games is growing tiresome, as stated by the author.
While ray tracing is a real-time rendering technique that simulates light behavior, affecting reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion, refractions, and more, it often takes a performance hit on budget-oriented GPUs. Powerful GPUs like the RTX 5090 see a reduction in frame rates when ray tracing is enabled, and budget-friendly cards like the RTX 4060 or Arc B580 struggle significantly with it.
Early benchmarks for Battlefield V revealed a steep price for ray tracing in terms of performance. Comments on Reddit note that while some can see the difference in lighting with ray tracing, others consider it to be subtle. Many users prefer a game that runs great and looks alright to a game that looks stunning but runs poorly.
AMD has recently fixed another issue with ray tracing support, but the technology is still improving by the year. However, the author suggests that in fast-paced titles like Battlefield 6, having high frame rates is more important than ray tracing, as it focuses on player versus player (PvP) or single-player combat missions.
While ray tracing may look great in some games, it is often used more for prestige than for actual gameplay benefits, according to the author. The decision by DICE and Ripple Effect to prioritise performance and optimization in Battlefield 6 is a move that is likely to be welcomed by many 'crazy games' enthusiasts.
