European Protocol Updates and What It Means for You

Attention drivers! The European Protocol, a popular choice in Europe, has seen some changes. According to the Russian Union of Motor Insurers (RUA), around 824,000 were issued last year. But don't fret if an accident turns sour and the repair costs exceed 100,000 rubles - thanks to a new law, you can now claim up to 200,000 rubles, provided the parties are in dispute about the circumstances and the extent of fault, and if all damages have been photographed.

Auto expert Andrey Lomanov praises the bill passing, but regrets the delay - discussions have been ongoing for over two years since the last increase in 2018. The rapid rise in spare parts and repair costs necessitated this adjustment. However, even with the increase, Lomanov advises caution when there's a disagreement or suspicion that the repair costs might exceed the expected amount.

So, what's the new deal? For disagreements, the payout limit has increased to 200,000 rubles. But, if there are no disagreements, payments can still reach 400,000 rubles. Lack of photographic evidence keeps the limit at 100,000 rubles, which, interestingly, is less than the average compensation amount for OSAGO - up by 17.4% in January-April compared to the same period the previous year, reaching 108,200 rubles, according to RUA.

While the European Protocol offers convenience where minor accidents involve no more than two vehicles, no injuries, and no serious damage, it's not always the best option. If there's the slightest suspicion that the repair costs might exceed 200,000 rubles or if there are disagreements or hidden damage, it's advised to involve the traffic inspectors.

Remember, it's essential to have the European Protocol form in your car. In case it's not available, you can always ask passing drivers to lend theirs. But when in doubt, don't leave the accident scene. Sticking around ensures you don't run into trouble with the authorities.

Numbers crunching:

| Payment Type | Jan–Apr 2024 (Rubles) | Jan–Apr 2025 (Rubles) | Change ||----------------------|-----------------------|-----------------------|--------|| Average CTP Payment | 92,200 | Not specified | +17.4% |

However, the official payout maximum for European Protocol accidents hasn't been revealed yet, so refer to the latest official Russian Ministry of Finance or Central Bank of Russia publications for the most current and binding figure.

In the realm of auto insurance, technology plays a crucial role. For instance, the effectiveness of photographic evidence in dispute resolution is emphasized in the European Protocol, allowing claims up to 200,000 rubles in certain circumstances. On the other hand, sports cars, with their high repair and maintenance costs, could potentially exceed this limit, making sports enthusiasts ponder the necessity of more comprehensive insurance policies.
