India to Match EV Costs with Petrol Vehicles in 4-6 Months

India is set to make electric vehicles (EVs) more affordable, aiming to balance environmental goals with consumer needs and industrial growth. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that EV costs will match those of petrol vehicles within the next 4-6 months, making electric mobility more accessible to Indian consumers.

Gadkari, speaking at the 20th FICCI Higher Education Summit 2025, stressed the urgent need for green energy adoption due to environmental and financial concerns. He is confident that India can surpass global competitors in the automobile industry through policy support, technological innovation, and renewable energy integration. The government's goal is to make India's automobile industry the world's largest within five years.

The affordability of EVs is expected to accelerate India's transition towards sustainable transportation. Farmers have already benefited from sustainable practices, earning an additional ₹45,000 crore by producing ethanol from corn. Under Gadkari's tenure, India's automobile industry size has grown from ₹14 lakh crore to ₹22 lakh crore. However, India still spends ₹22 lakh crore annually on fuel imports, highlighting the need for a shift to EVs.

With the cost of EVs set to match those of petrol vehicles within the next 4-6 months, India is poised to make significant strides in its transition to sustainable transportation. This move is expected to benefit both consumers and the economy, while also helping India achieve its environmental goals.
