India's charging infrastructure movement gains momentum, with Haryana leading the charge
Haryana Paves the Way for a Sustainable EV Future
A new ICCT briefing has highlighted Haryana as a trailblazer in India's transition towards a sustainable, electric vehicle (EV) future. The state's draft EV policy, implemented since July 2022, focuses on developing extensive public and private charging facilities.
Currently, Haryana has 454 public EV charging stations, accounting for 2.9% of India's total charging infrastructure. Cities like Gurugram, Faridabad, and Sonipat have a significant share of these charging stations, supported by over 370 installed charging points primarily in these urban areas.
However, the distribution of EV charging stations in Haryana is concentrated primarily in urban districts like Gurugram and Faridabad. This uneven distribution of fast and slow EV chargers poses a challenge in Haryana's EV adoption. As of now, only 1.3% of chargers in Haryana are fast chargers, underscoring a significant area for improvement.
The report highlights a significant imbalance in the distribution of EV charging stations across Haryana. While cities like Gurugram lead with 25.1% of Haryana's EV charging stations, followed by Faridabad with 7.6%, other districts lag behind in terms of EV charging infrastructure development. Some districts, like Nuh, Palwal, and Mahendragarh, boast a higher number of charging stations relative to the number of EVs.
To address these issues, the ICCT briefing calls for a robust and well-distributed EV charging network in Haryana. It suggests increasing the number of charging stations per 1,000 EVs in Haryana and boosting the proportion of fast chargers, particularly in districts with higher EV usage. The study also recommends establishing benchmarks for minimum distance to charging stations in Haryana.
Haryana, a key player in India's industrial growth and urbanization, is strategically positioned, surrounding the capital territory of Delhi on three sides and home to over 25 million people. The development of an efficient charging infrastructure is paramount as Haryana progresses with its EV policy.
The study sheds light on Haryana's current readiness for an efficient EV charging network. As the state continues to implement its EV policy, it provides a roadmap for other Indian states to follow suit in their journey towards a sustainable, EV-powered future.
