India's Energy Storage Sector Booms, Targets 33 GWh by 2028
India's energy storage sector is witnessing significant growth. By 2028, the country aims to reach 33 GWh of cumulative energy storage installations. Currently, India boasts an operational pumped storage capacity of 5 GW, with over 81 GW more in the pipeline.
In the first half of 2025, India added 48.4 MWh of energy storage capacity, a notable decline of 74% compared to the same period last year. Despite this, solar-plus-storage systems remain dominant, accounting for nearly 56% of the country's cumulative installed energy storage capacity.
Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat emerged as the top three states for energy storage installations. Gujarat, in particular, has the largest pipeline of standalone battery storage capacity under development in India.
As of June 2025, India's energy storage capacity stood at 490 MWh. With ambitious targets and ongoing projects, the country is poised to significantly expand its energy storage capabilities in the coming years.
