Insurance company Philadelphia Indemnity reveals June data leak

===============================================================================

The Philadelphia Indemnity Insurance Company (PIIC) has disclosed a data breach that occurred between June 9 and June 10, 2025. The breach involved unauthorized access to files containing sensitive customer information, such as names, dates of birth, and driver’s license numbers.

The company has not publicly disclosed the identity of the threat actor responsible for the breach, nor has an official attribution been provided. The incident is part of a larger cyber event that affected multiple insurers in June 2025, including Erie Insurance and First Insurance Company of Hawaii.

Despite the breach, PIIC did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, they have reported the incident to law enforcement and retained outside forensic experts to investigate the matter further.

The company initially referred to the incident as a network outage, but it was later confirmed to be a data breach, not a ransomware attack. The Scattered Spider cybercrime collective, which has targeted retailers, insurance firms, and airlines in recent months, has not been officially linked to the PIIC breach.

Affected individuals have been notified and offered one year of complimentary identity monitoring services. However, the breach notice and related reports do not specify the total number of customers impacted.

This data breach serves as a reminder for the importance of cybersecurity in the insurance industry and the need for companies to take proactive measures to protect sensitive customer information. As the investigation continues, it is essential to stay informed and follow any updates from PIIC and law enforcement regarding the breach.
