Investment of up to $362 million in Almaty Airport
Almaty International Airport, the busiest in Central Asia, is set for a transformation over the next three decades with the launch of the Horizon Project. This ambitious infrastructure project, worth an estimated $1.5-$1.7 billion, aims to modernize and expand the airport, positioning it as a major Eurasian aviation hub by 2050.
The Horizon Project, unveiled by Göker Köse, President of Almaty International Airport, is the largest airport development initiative in Kazakhstan. The project encompasses five phases, with the first phase scheduled to be completed by the end of 2028.
The first phase of the Horizon Project, valued at approximately $362-365 million, includes around 130 projects. Key initiatives include the full reconstruction of the domestic terminal, construction of a new concrete runway, and the development of a cargo apron and maintenance hangar. Other projects include the upgrade of fuel infrastructure, construction of a new hotel and multi-level parking near the airport, and the reconstruction of the VIP apron and aircraft parking stands.
The Horizon Project is not related to the Arkalyk Airport reconstruction.
In 2025, Almaty International Airport is expected to serve 12.5 million passengers, half of whom will be international. Upon completion of all Horizon phases by 2050, the airport's capacity is projected to increase to handle up to 40 million passengers per year, with infrastructure to support up to 150 aircraft parking positions.
The Horizon Project is a response to the challenges facing Almaty International Airport in the current climate. The project emphasizes a modern, eco-friendly, and technologically advanced airport infrastructure. Airport fees are planned to increase to reach regional and global market levels, ensuring financial sustainability for the project.
Göker Köse, President of Almaty International Airport, presented the development master plan for the Horizon Project to participants. The Horizon Project was launched on August 5, as reported by Liter.kz.
The Horizon Project represents Kazakhstan’s largest airport development initiative aimed at securing Almaty’s role as a key aviation hub in the region by mid-century. The specifics of phases 2 through 5 are less detailed publicly, but they collectively aim to increase capacity and infrastructure to accommodate expected growth.
