IonQ concludes purchase of Oxford Ionics, swiftly expanding its quantum computing blueprint

IonQ, the leading commercial quantum computing and quantum networking company, has made a significant stride in its quest to deliver the world's most powerful quantum computers. In September 2025, the company completed the acquisition of Oxford Ionics, a quantum computing company based in the United Kingdom.

Oxford Ionics brings a team of world-class scientists and engineers, along with patented innovations in trapped ion quantum systems, to IonQ. This acquisition is expected to accelerate IonQ's roadmap towards fault-tolerant quantum computing and broad quantum advantage.

IonQ plans to integrate Oxford Ionics' record-breaking ion trap technology with its quantum systems to develop high-fidelity quantum architectures optimized for both compute and networking. This move is part of IonQ's mission to make quantum computing more accessible and impactful than ever before.

Dr. Chris Ballance, the Co-founder and CEO of Oxford Ionics, expressed his excitement about the acquisition, saying, "IonQ's innovative technology and rapid growth have been recognized by numerous prestigious lists, and we are thrilled to join forces to push the boundaries of quantum computing even further."

IonQ's advancements in quantum computing are focused on accelerating innovation in various sectors such as drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense. The company's quantum networking technology positions it as a leader in building the quantum internet.

IonQ's current generation quantum computers, IonQ Forte and IonQ Forte Enterprise, have been helping customers and partners achieve 20x performance results. The company's stock is traded on the NYSE under the symbol IONQ.

The acquisition of Oxford Ionics follows a series of strategic business announcements that solidify IonQ's position at the forefront of quantum innovation. IonQ has secured a majority stake in ID Quantique, and made acquisitions of Qubitekk, Capella Space, and Lightsynq Technologies.

IonQ's commitment to quantum computing excellence has not gone unnoticed. The company has been recognised in Newsweek's 2025 Excellence Index 1000, Forbes' 2025 Most Successful Mid-Cap Companies list, and Built In's 2025 100 Best Midsize Places to Work in Washington DC and Seattle, respectively.

As IonQ moves towards its goal of delivering a quantum computer with 2 million qubits by 2030, the acquisition of Oxford Ionics marks a significant step forward in its quest to lead the way in quantum computing.
