Kenya's Power Grid Strengthened: 400kV Line Repairs Complete
Kenya's power grid has been bolstered with the completion of repairs on the 400kV Loiyangalani to Suswa line. The restoration, costing Sh207 million, reinstates the grid's N-1 contingency, ensuring resilience against faults.
The project management, undertaken by Ketraco, involved replacing six collapsed towers near Longonot and reconnecting two circuits. This has restored the line's full operational capacity, supporting Kenya's Vision 2030 and international climate commitments. The restoration was completed in two phases, with Circuit 1 energized on September 20 and Circuit 2 on September 28.
The improved line can now evacuate up to 300 megawatts (MW) from the Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) project, Africa's largest wind farm. LTWP contributes over 10 percent of Kenya's electricity supply. The enhanced reliability in power supply boosts investor confidence and assures consumers of consistent access to electricity, crucial for economic growth.
The restored 400kV Loiyangalani to Suswa line, a vital link for transmitting renewable energy, has been stabilized with new conductor stringing and Optical Ground Wire (OPGW). The successful completion of this project marks a significant step towards Kenya's renewable energy goals and ensures the grid can withstand faults without major disruptions.
