Lambda Synthetics' PolyPulse may not be aesthetically pleasing, but it could potentially offer a break from the 16-step musical composition grid.

Lambda Synthetics' PolyPulse could potentially shatter the limitations of the 16-step grid, despite its less aesthetically pleasing nature.

The Lambda Synthetics PolyPulse is a groundbreaking algorithmic performance workstation that stands out from traditional sequencers and synthesizers. This hefty groovebox, priced at £1769/$2099, boasts an industrial design and a plethora of unique features.

Each of the five tracks on the PolyPulse comes equipped with its own algorithmic sequencer, polyphonic sound engine, audio effects chain, and a dedicated XY touchpad for expressive control. The sequencer treats rhythm and pitch independently, with four independent 'pulses' on each track that can be shaped into complex, evolving polyrhythms through multiple pattern parameters.

Pitches are assigned via a global note list shared across all tracks, which can be reversed and randomized to generate varied melodies. The sound engines span classic subtractive synthesis, FM, additive, granular, and physical modelling, as well as a 'quad engine' for drum synthesis and stereo sample playback. The PolyPulse boasts a massive 26GB of onboard memory for sample playback.

The PolyPulse's effects chain is equally impressive, with four effects slots per track and an additional four slots on the master bus. Effects include compression, reverb, delay, EQ, filter, drive, and tape emulation. A powerful per-voice modulation system allows for the assignment of various modulators like multi-waveform LFOs, AD envelopes, 16-step sequencers, or randomizers to any destination across sound engines, effects, and even other modulators.

In 2023, Lambda Synthetics debuted the PolyPulse at the Superbooth trade show. Since then, it has been updated with a song mode that allows for the arrangement of patterns via a unique algorithmic cue system. The PolyPulse is now in production and available to order for UK/EU customers at Thomann, and for US customers at Perfect Circuit.

The PolyPulse also features four audio inputs, eight audio outputs, a stereo headphone output, and an Ethernet port for updating firmware and uploading samples. It also has 5-pin DIN MIDI in/out and trigger in/out, making it compatible with a wide range of other music equipment.

More information about the PolyPulse can be found on Lambda Synthetics' website. This versatile, highly flexible instrument is designed for algorithmic composition and live performance, offering a new level of freedom beyond the constraints of traditional step sequencers and fixed polyphony.

  1. The PolyPulse's unique features include an algorithmic sequencer, polyphonic sound engine, and audio effects chain on each of its five tracks, making it an ideal gadget for music production and live entertainment using technology.
  2. With its extensive sound engines ranging from subtractive synthesis to physical modeling, and a massive 26GB of onboard memory for sample playback, the PolyPulse is not just a synthesizer, but a multi-faceted technology tool for music creation and entertainment.
