Leica improves M11 series with new software, augmenting safety and efficiency for their 60MP rangefinders' operations.

The renowned camera manufacturer, Leica, has announced a new firmware update for its M11 rangefinder cameras. This update, version 2.5.1, prioritizes improving the camera's reliability and data protection over flashy features.

The update introduces several key improvements and features aimed at enhancing wireless connectivity security and data protection. One of the most significant changes is the implementation of first-run protection, which prevents unauthorized remote access during the initial setup of the camera.

Another notable addition is the introduction of secure formatting for the internal memory. This feature ensures that sensitive information is protected, especially when transferring or selling the camera, by fully overwriting existing data rather than just deleting the file index.

The update also strengthens the security of the wireless connection by generating a new, random WLAN password after a factory reset. This prevents the reuse of old credentials, thereby improving the security of the wireless connection.

Additionally, the firmware update addresses an important error correction and includes bug fixes for smoother and more reliable camera operation. However, it does not introduce any creative tools or new shooting modes.

Leica recommends using UHS-II SD cards to avoid technical issues and ensures that the update can be installed directly through the camera menu or via the Leica Fotos app. The update is applicable across the M11 family, including M11, M11-P, M11 Monochrom, and M11-D models.
