Lithuania Launches Nationwide Drone Training Program

Lithuania is set to open nine drone training centers by 2028, with the first three centers launching in September 2025. This ambitious initiative aims to train 15,500 adults and 7,000 children in drone piloting, construction, and engineering skills, from grades three through 12.

The curriculum is designed to cater to different age groups, with younger children learning simple drone building and piloting, while high school students delve into programming, first-person view (FPV) drone control, and 3D drone parts design.

This program, jointly conducted by the Ministries of Defense and Education in Lithuania, is part of a broader strategy to enhance public competence in drone technology and strengthen civil resistance capabilities. With Lithuania's strategic position bordering Russia's Kaliningrad exclave and Belarus, the program aims to bolster civilian preparedness against evolving security threats.

Drones have become significant in both civilian and military contexts, and this program is a response to the increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles by Russian forces. Lithuania is also seeking to strengthen its defense capabilities and arms industry by developing and manufacturing drones.

The Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union and the Lithuanian Non-Formal Education Agency (LINEŠA) will be conducting the training. Participants will be taught both theory and practice in handling drones, similar to the courses already offered by the Ministry of Defense in Lithuania.

This initiative aligns with similar programs in other Baltic states and forms part of a broader push to improve drone detection and counter-drone defenses along Lithuania's eastern borders. The government views this program as essential for fostering technical skills and civic responsibility, while also addressing defense needs highlighted by recent incursions of armed drones into Lithuanian airspace.
