Live Streaming Audio Sources Standardized through Lawo Solution by CBC/Radio-Canada
CBC/Radio-Canada, Canada's national public broadcaster, has implemented the Lawo HOME mc² DSP app to standardize and process audio streams for live events. This flexible and scalable solution addresses the challenge of managing non-standard audio content efficiently, ensuring consistent audio quality across various streaming channels.
A Flexible and Scalable Solution for Audio Processing
The Lawo HOME mc² DSP app is designed to cater to the needs of live streaming events. It offers functionalities such as audio channel remapping, gain adjustment, downmix, and mono summing, which help in standardizing audio signals from different sources.
CoMixer Functionality for Customizable Audio Processing
The CoMixer function within the HOME mc² DSP app enables the instantiation of multiple audio shuffling mixers. Each instance provides DSP capabilities for level changes and other audio tweaks, allowing for customizable audio processing.
Scalability and Flexibility for a Wide Range of Streaming Events
The system can handle up to 40 shuffling mixers per app instance, and CBC/Radio-Canada uses two instances to accommodate up to 80 streaming events. The app is lightweight enough that three instances can run on a single 64-core CPU server, though CBC/Radio-Canada chose to host them on separate servers for redundancy.
Integration with VSM Panel for Convenient Control
The app integrates with VSM (Virtual Studio Manager) workflow control systems, allowing for convenient control and management of audio processing via the VSM panel. Two VSM panels have been created, each displaying up to 40 mixes.
Jaime Thomas, supervising technician of digital presentation at CBC/Radio-Canada, stated that one app offering as many shuffling instances as needed can be controlled using VSM to provide the required agility.
Achieving Standardized 2.0 Audio Streams
The goal is to achieve a standardized 2.0 audio stream for live events streamed to the web using downstream AWS Elemental encoders. The system modifies non-standard audio content to meet this standard, making it suitable for digital streaming.
In summary, the Lawo HOME mc² DSP app provides CBC/Radio-Canada with an agile and efficient audio processing solution that supports a wide range of streaming events while maintaining high audio quality standards. The broadcaster sought a flexible SMPTE ST 2110-based solution to replace legacy, single-purpose hardware, and Lawo's HOME mc2 DSP was chosen as the most elegant and compact solution for CBC/Radio-Canada's envisaged audio workflow.
