When Apple rolls out the update to iOS 26 in September, it's not just a beautifully redesigned user interface that iPhone users can expect. Devices will also gain practical new features like live translations or an enhanced voicemail system, as well as various other improvements and enhancements.

Apple unveiled iOS 26 at the WWDC developer conference, marking a significant leap with its numbering and a complete overhaul of the user interface for the first time since 2013. iOS 26 isn't just about aesthetics; it offers a range of new capabilities for a more seamless user experience.

Embrace the Liquid Glass Revolution

Apple is unifying its operating systems, evident not only in the matching version number 26 but also in the shared "Liquid Glass" look for user interfaces. According to Apple, these interfaces change dynamically to emphasize content more, using transparent elements that create a sense of movement and vitality over other content, making controls, navigation, app icons, widgets, and more appear more engaging.

Starting on the lock screen, the clock time adjusts fluidly to the available space, creating a more visually pleasing experience. You'll also see a 3D effect with background images when moving your iPhone back and forth. A transparent address bar in the Safari browser allows websites to fill the entire display, providing a cleaner and more efficient browsing experience on iOS 26.

The Camera app becomes more streamlined with the shutter now "floating" above the preview instead of being framed by a black bar. Another example of "Liquid Glass" is the Photos app, featuring a transparent look and separate tabs for the media library and collections.

Brainier Than Ever: Apple Intelligence

Though Apple had to postpone plans to make Siri as powerful as Google's Gemini until next year, iOS 26 still brings exciting new or improved features with Apple Intelligence.

Topping the list are live translations for text and audio available in messages, FaceTime, and phone calls. Initially only available in English, Spanish, German, French, and Portuguese, speech translations are coming soon. Visual Intelligence offers new features like asking ChatGPT about what's on the screen or searching Google, Etsy, or other supported apps to find similar images and products.

In English, you can also automatically add displayed events to your calendar with location, date, and time, while extended AI capabilities help enhance conversations with Gemini Mojis or images created using Image Playground. Shortcuts can help by integrating Apple Intelligence functions in iOS 26, and, if desired, AI can automatically identify and summarize tracking details from emails sent by retailers and suppliers.

Streamlining Calls and Messages

The Phone app now offers a unified layout that combines favorites, call history, and voicemails in one place. It can also automatically answer calls from unknown numbers and collect information to help you decide whether to accept or reject the call. An optional hold assistant is practical: if you're on hold during a call, it takes over and notifies you when there's a human on the other end of the line.

In the messaging app, an option exists to filter out messages from unknown persons. They appear in a special folder where you can mark the number as known, ask for more information, or delete it. This creates a clutter-free environment, allowing you to focus on important conversations.

Some people are excited about iOS 26's added capabilities, such as the ability to create 26 polls or the option to add individual backgrounds created in Image Playground to conversations. These features are designed to make messaging experiences more interactive and engaging. In group chats, users can now see a typing indicator and request, send, or receive Apple Cash.

iOS 26 brings new features for CarPlay in the car, including a compact view for incoming calls that allows you to see who's calling without missing important information like directions, the ability to quickly react to messages with emojis and other symbols, the option to pin conversations, widgets, and real-time compact information about sports scores, delivery status, travel plans, and more.

What Else?

"With Lyrics Pronunciation, everyone can sing along, regardless of the language they speak," Apple writes. This means real-time translations of song lyrics in Apple Music, which can result in some interesting and hilarious moments during your music experiences.

Other enhancements include updates to Wallet, which show live activity information from airlines, such as gate information, delays, and airport maps. In addition, parents get more child safety options, including allowing contact requests, blurring sensitive content in FaceTime calls and photos in shared albums, and allowing children to download an app with age-restricted content that parents have restricted.

The Safari browser gains improved protection against fingerprinting, a technique used to track users online based on specific device or browser data. Among the accessibility features, there's a new interface for Braille displays, which users can now use to create Braille notes or perform calculations using their iPhone.

In summary, iOS 26 goes beyond a sleek design and introduces an array of practical new features and enhancements, making it an exciting update for iPhone users.

Community policy may need to address the new features such as live translations and visual intelligence, ensuring privacy and ethical use of these advanced technologies.

Employment policy could benefit from the technology advancements in iOS 26, as gadgets like smartphones and the improved functionality they offer can enhance productivity and efficiency in various industries.
