MG4 receives an impressive 11,067 pre-sales within its initial day
The British automaker MG Motor has unveiled its latest offering, the all-new MG4 compact hatchback, which comes with an innovative semi-solid-state battery. This cutting-edge battery technology is set to revolutionise the electric vehicle (EV) industry, offering improved safety, faster charging times, and extended range.
The semi-solid-state battery, produced by MG Motor, a subsidiary of SAIC Motor, uses a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry and comes in two pack options: 42.8 kWh and 53.9 kWh. These options provide a CLTC range of 437 km (272 miles) and 530 km (330 miles) respectively. The battery supports ultra-fast charging at 2C, allowing it to charge from 30% to 80% in around 20 minutes.
The battery structure employs an aluminium-rare earth alloy with lanthanum and cerium for enhanced strength and thermal management. The thermal management system is a proprietary design that breaks traditional patents, allowing for efficiency, comfort, and stability.
The all-new MG4 also boasts a front-mounted motor producing 120 kW (161 hp) and 250 Nm torque, with a front-wheel drive layout. The vehicle is designed for weight and space efficiency, with the option for cell-to-body battery integration.
In terms of pricing, the entry-level MG4 versions with conventional battery packs start from approximately 73,800 yuan (~$10,100 USD). The pricing for the semi-solid-state battery variant has not been announced yet but is expected to be revealed in September 2025, with deliveries planned before the end of the year.
Pre-orders for the all-new MG4 began on August 5, with the vehicle attracting 11,067 pre-orders in the first 24 hours. The all-new MG4 is a redesigned model, featuring the semi-solid-state battery as a new and improved feature not present in the previous MG4 model.
The semi-solid-state battery variant of the all-new MG4 represents a significant step towards mainstream adoption of advanced battery technology. With its enhanced safety, fast charging, and competitive range, the MG4 is poised to make a lasting impact in the EV market. Pricing details for the semi-solid-state battery variant will be officially announced soon.
