MI6 intelligence agency in the UK intends to expand recruitment efforts into the dark web, particularly focusing on potential candidates within Russia.
In a groundbreaking move, the British spy agency, MI6, has announced the launch of a new recruitment platform named "Silent Courier." This web portal, harnessing the anonymity of the dark web, is part of efforts to strengthen the U.K.'s intelligence capabilities and address growing threats of global instability and hostile intelligence activities.
The announcement, expected to be made in Istanbul by outgoing MI6 chief Richard Moore, follows a similar approach taken by the U.S.'s Central Intelligence Agency in 2023. The "Silent Courier" portal is designed to enable anyone, anywhere in the world with sensitive information related to terrorism or hostile intelligence activity, to securely contact the U.K. and offer their services.
Instructions on how to use the portal will be publicly available on MI6's verified YouTube channel. Users are recommended to access the portal through trustworthy VPNs and devices not linked to themselves for added security.
The recruitment drive, which includes targeting potential spies in Russia, is a response to the changing world and the need to stay ahead of adversaries. The new Foreign Secretary of the U.K., Yvette Cooper, has emphasized the importance of this, stating that the U.K.'s world-class intelligence agencies are working to keep British people safe.
Yvette Cooper further emphasized that the aim is to bolster U.K.'s defenses against global instability, international terrorism, and hostile state intelligence activity. The "Silent Courier" web portal will be available for use starting from Friday.
This innovative recruitment strategy marks the first time MI6 is utilizing the dark web for such purposes. It is a testament to the agency's adaptability and commitment to maintaining its position at the forefront of intelligence gathering in a rapidly evolving world.
