Repeated Drone Sightings at Munich Airport - Operations Temporarily Suspended - Munich Airport Disrupted Again by Drone Sightings
Munich Airport experienced disruption for the second consecutive night due to suspected drone sightings, leading to flight delays and cancellations. Operations were initially scheduled to resume at 05:00 on Saturday but were delayed following further sightings in the early morning.
On Friday evening around 22:50, drones were spotted near the north and south runways of Munich Airport. This resulted in the suspension of operations around 21:30. Around 23 incoming flights had to be diverted, 12 flights to Munich were canceled, and 46 departures could not proceed as planned.
This incident follows a similar disruption on Thursday evening, where Munich Airport was also suspended due to drone sightings, affecting approximately 3,000 passengers. Recent weeks have seen numerous unauthorized drone flights over Danish airports and military facilities, as well as in Schleswig-Holstein. The motives behind these sightings remain unknown, and the operators have not been identified despite investigations by federal police.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has called for increased funding for drone defense following the incidents. Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig, however, warned against the extensive use of the military for drone defense. The previous government has decided to amend the Air Security Act to allow the military to shoot down drones in the future. Munich Airport operations resumed later on Saturday, but the impact of these disruptions on flight schedules and passengers is yet to be fully assessed.
