Munich Airport Disrupted by Drones: Thousands Stranded, Delays Persist

Munich Airport experienced significant disruptions on Friday evening due to drone sightings, leading to the temporary halt of air traffic. The incident affected numerous incoming flights and caused delays that persisted into the following day.

The disruption began on the evening of October 2, 2025, with militarily used drones first spotted over Munich. The sightings initially occurred at Munich Airport and later near a nearby German military facility. This was not an isolated incident, as similar disruptions had taken place just two days prior, on Thursday evening, resulting in flights being diverted to other airports such as Nuremberg and Stuttgart.

The German military has been assisting Munich Airport since Friday to detect and address the drone issue. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann has called for expanded powers to shoot down drones if necessary, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Around 6,500 passengers were stranded overnight due to the disruptions and were provided with essential necessities.

The motive behind these drone flights remains unclear, with ongoing investigations aiming to determine who is responsible. Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder has plans to introduce fast-track legislation for drone control in response to these incidents.

Munich Airport's operations resumed on Saturday morning, but delays continued throughout the day following the drone sightings. The use of militarily operated drones in these incidents is a cause for concern, as they differ from typical hobbyist drones. Authorities are working to prevent such disruptions in the future and ensure the safety of air traffic.
