Munich Airport Drone Disruptions: Thousands Affected, 170 Flights Canceled
Munich Airport experienced substantial disruptions due to unidentified drone sightings over two consecutive nights, impacting thousands of passengers and leaving some stranded overnight. The airport and local authorities have taken measures to assist travelers and ensure safety.
On Thursday and Friday evenings, drones of unknown origin were spotted near and on the airport grounds, leading to temporary suspensions of flight operations. Around 6,500 passengers were affected, with approximately 3,000 impacted on Thursday alone. The disruptions resulted in flight diversions, cancellations, and delays, with around 170 flights canceled for operational reasons on Saturday.
Stranded passengers were provided with necessary care on-site, including field beds, blankets, air mattresses, drinks, and snacks. Shops, a pharmacy, and catering facilities extended their opening hours to support those affected. The German Armed Forces have been assisting in monitoring the airport at the request of the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior.
Following the drone sightings, Munich Airport resumed operations on Saturday with expected delays. Authorities continue to investigate the source of the drones and work to prevent future disruptions. Passengers are advised to check flight statuses and allow for extra time when traveling through Munich Airport.
