The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has embarked on an initiative to boost cybersecurity awareness and enhance the technical capabilities of youth, students, and ICT professionals across the country. This initiative, known as the Malawi Computer Emergency Response Team (MwCERT), was kick-started at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Thyolo.

The primary objective of this nationwide tour of cyber drills is to foster a competent and cyber-resilient generation that can effectively respond to cyber threats. The initiative targets academic institutions across the nation, focusing on equipping students and emerging ICT professionals with the necessary skills to detect and respond to cyber incidents.

During a presentation, MACRA highlighted the role of the Data Protection Authority during the initiative. The commendation emphasized the importance of empowering the public with knowledge on how to protect themselves from cyber fraud.

Christopher Banda, Head of MwCERT, stated that the cyber drills are designed to prepare a generation capable of defending Malawi's digital assets as they transition into the workforce. The drills aim to raise cybersecurity awareness among students and ICT professionals, build technical skills for effective cyber incident detection and response, and foster a stronger cybersecurity culture in Malawi's academic and professional environments.

Participants will also be equipped to contribute to national cybersecurity resilience through practical, hands-on exercises. MACRA collaborates with universities and other stakeholders to ensure these drills effectively develop Malawi’s cybersecurity workforce. This tour forms part of broader efforts to build sustainable cyber defense capabilities nationwide.

In addition to the cyber drills, MACRA shared information on opportunities available through the MUUNI Fund. The Head of Science and Information Technology at MUST commended MwCERT's efforts, acknowledging the vital role such initiatives play in shaping the future of Malawi's digital landscape.

As the tour continues, it is clear that MACRA and MwCERT are committed to empowering Malawi's youth and ICT professionals, strengthening cybersecurity awareness, and enhancing the nation's technical capabilities to combat cyber threats effectively.
