New Driving Test Requirement Focuses on Navigation System Knowledge

In an effort to promote safer driving, the Central Safety Driving Department (CSDD) has introduced a new requirement for driving tests: demonstrating knowledge of navigation systems. This change, which has been in the works for some time, is being addressed primarily through practical testing with built-in, AI-enhanced navigation tools.

During the navigation test stage, which lasts for five minutes, the instructor will not give any commands. Instead, the learner driver's task is to follow the navigation instructions provided by the integrated GPS and voice guidance system. The destination during the driving test will be set by the instructor.

The CSDD believes that it is important for new drivers to have knowledge of navigation systems, as they are increasingly used in everyday driving. The purpose of the navigation test stage is to assess the driver's ability to use navigation systems effectively.

The focus of the new requirement seems to be on teaching the use of commonly available navigation features rather than on system-specific details. The apps and training tools simulate local road networks with full maps and voice instructions to help learners get comfortable following route guidance and responding appropriately. The use of AI assistants within these learning tools allows personalized help on how to prepare for navigation-related aspects of the test.

While various car brands and third-party apps have different navigation capabilities, the current driver test preparation emphasizes basic turn-by-turn navigation skills and following voice prompts rather than deeply testing differences between systems. No official source indicates that the test mandates knowledge of every nuance of multiple navigation platforms individually. Instead, the practical competency focus is on effective use of GPS-based navigation aids as part of safe and confident driving during the test.

The CSDD has tested the navigation test stage in practice for a few days with no reported problems. Aksenoks, a spokesperson for the CSDD, confirmed that the navigation test stage has been tested successfully. He also explained that new drivers need to acquire and demonstrate knowledge of navigation systems during their driving test.

This new requirement may impact both the public and driving schools. The public will need to be aware of this when taking their driving test, and driving schools may need to adjust their teaching methods to prepare their students for this new requirement. Aksenoks stated that people often look at navigation systems when they want to go somewhere, and the navigation test stage is intended to be a brief assessment of the driver's navigation skills.
