Nestlé Purina Aims to Make All Packaging Recyclable or Reusable by 2025
Nestlé Purina, a leading pet care company, has joined forces with Nestlé to set an ambitious goal. By 2025, they aim to make all their packaging, including pet food packaging, recyclable or reusable. This move aligns with their commitment to a circular economy and stronger recycling infrastructure.
Flexible plastic packaging, often used in pet food, poses a challenge to this goal due to current recycling limitations. However, a recent report, 'Flexible Packaging Recycling in Material Recovery Facilities Pilot', offers hope. It demonstrates that flexible plastic packaging can be efficiently recycled in large single-stream MRFs, processed into a commodity bale called rFlex.
Diane Herndon, senior manager of sustainability at Purina, emphasises the need to upgrade recycling infrastructure. She believes this is crucial for recycling flexible plastics effectively. Nestlé Purina is taking steps towards this, being a founding member of the Material Recovery for the Future project. This initiative promotes a circular economy and stronger recycling infrastructure.
Nestlé Purina's commitment to making all their packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025 is a significant step. While challenges exist, particularly with flexible plastic packaging, recent research shows promising recycling solutions. Through projects like Material Recovery for the Future, Nestlé Purina is working towards a more sustainable future for both pets and the planet.
