Never Send ID Photos via WhatsApp, Warn Experts
Security experts have issued a stark warning: never send a photo of your real id via WhatsApp, even if the request appears to come from a trusted source. The risk of identity theft and fraud is too high.
Criminals are increasingly sophisticated, often masquerading as legitimate companies to trick people into sharing their ID documents. Estate agents and hotels are among the organisations they impersonate.
Once an id photo is compromised, the consequences can be severe and long-lasting. Victims may face difficulties proving they were not behind fraudulent transactions, as stolen ID data can be used to open accounts, apply for loans, or make money transfers with traces covered abroad.
To protect yourself, never send a photo of your real id via WhatsApp, regardless of who requests it. If you're unsure about a request, verify it independently before complying. In case of identity theft, act quickly and report it to your local authorities and financial institutions.
