OpenAI's new model, GPT-5, developed for enhanced competitiveness in the AI industry
OpenAI, the leading research organisation in artificial intelligence, has announced the arrival of its latest model, GPT-5. The new model is designed to offer more engaging and reliable conversations, boasting improvements in speed, fluidity, and reduction of factual errors.
While the speed improvement may not be revolutionary compared to its predecessor GPT-4, it is a notable difference, particularly in complex reasoning tasks. GPT-5 processes these tasks with roughly half the output tokens needed by earlier models, saving time and cost. It also handles simple tasks faster and manages deep reasoning more efficiently.
One of the key improvements in GPT-5 is the fluidity of exchanges. The model offers more natural, human-like conversations with improved narrative flow and literary depth. It handles ambiguity better, supports quick tone and style changes without needing complex prompts, and provides more emotionally intelligent, context-aware responses. These enhancements make interactions feel more fluid and expressive compared to GPT-4.
GPT-5 also significantly reduces hallucinations, with up to 80% fewer factual errors than GPT-4 during reasoning processes. It also decreases over-agreeable or sycophantic responses by over 50%, improving honesty about its limitations and increasing overall trustworthiness.
In addition to these improvements, GPT-5 showcases enhanced problem-solving abilities, particularly in health, math, coding, and multimodal tasks. It also boasts better instruction-following and tool use for complex, multi-step requests. Furthermore, it introduces preset personalities and improved personalization features for tailored interactions.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, compared GPT-5 to a PhD-level expert on any subject, highlighting its potential for complex real-world tasks. However, GPT-5 is intended to avoid the 'expert who has an answer for everything' issue, providing more accurate and honest responses.
Digital innovation expert, Damien Douani, described GPT-5 as an evolution rather than a revolution, emphasising its incremental yet significant improvements. The exact release or availability of GPT-5 has not been disclosed.
While GPT-5 is expected to be better at generating computer code, the text does not indicate any significant change in this ability compared to GPT-4. The new interface features earthy, orange, blue, and purple hues, but the text does not specify whether GPT-5 has undergone a change in its color palette.
