OpenAI's Sora Tops App Charts With Text-to-Video AI
OpenAI's text-to-video generative AI chatbot, Sora, has taken the app world by storm. Since its recent update to the Sora 2 platform, it has become the most-downloaded app. Launched on September 30, 2025, Sora initially saw an invite-only release in the U.S. and Canada.
Sora's popularity can be attributed to its unique features. It significantly lowers the barrier for content creators to produce eye-catching short videos. No camera, live shoots, excessive editing, or actors are required. Users can create hyperreal videos based on text inputs and even insert themselves or friends into these videos.
The app's success has positioned OpenAI in the competitive short-form video market, where giants like Meta, TikTok, and Google are already established. Sora's impact highlights the growing influence of OpenAI's product suite and marks a new milestone for generative AI.
Sora's launch saw impressive numbers. According to 9to5mac via AppFigures, it had about 56,000 U.S. installs on day one and about 108,000 installs on day two. The app debuted at the third spot on the App Store charts and reached number one a day after its launch.
OpenAI plans to extend Sora invites beyond the U.S. and Canada, aiming for wider rollouts. However, the company is also addressing potential misuse of the app, including safety, ethics, and identity risks such as deepfakes and misinformation. As a responsible AI developer, OpenAI continues to collaborate with partners like SAP to ensure its technologies benefit humanity.
