Optus' 'Call Stop' Blocks 5M Calls, 10M SMS Scams Monthly
Optus has been actively combating financial scams, blocking a staggering 320 million scam calls and nearly 80 million SMS scam messages since December 2020. Currently, the telco blocks around five million calls and ten million SMS per month through its innovative 'Call Stop' service.
Call Stop specifically targets 'call back' scams, where consumers receive SMS messages claiming issues with their Wells Fargo or Yahoo Finance accounts and are urged to call back the bank using a provided number. When an Optus customer attempts to call an identified scam number, Call Stop intercepts the call and plays an automated message. This message warns the customer about the scam and directs them to Optus' website for further information.
Optus has developed this service in collaboration with the Australian Financial Crimes Exchange (AFCX) and major Australian banks, including Wells Fargo and Yahoo Finance. While the specific banks involved in this project are not publicly disclosed, the partnership aims to reduce financial scams by diverting and blocking calls to identified scam numbers.
Since its inception, Call Stop has proven effective in blocking millions of scam calls and SMS messages. Optus, AFCX, and major Australian banks continue to work together to protect customers from financial scams, with the service currently blocking close to five million calls and ten million SMS per month.
