Peloton Users Now Able to Stream YouTube Directly
You've got some spiffy news, mate! Get ready to spice up your Peloton sessions, as you can now watch good ol' YouTube on your Bike, Bike+, Tread, or Row. But hang on, you might be thinking, "Ain't YouTube TV already an option on the Peloton Entertainment tab? What's the diff?" Well, buddy, YouTube TV is a paid TV service, while YouTube is well, YouTube. This new integration lets you watch regular YouTube videos just like you would on your smartphone or laptop.
Here's the lowdown on how to activate YouTube on Peloton:
Accessing YouTube is a breeze, similar to reaching non-class features such as scenic rides or my personal fave, Lanebreak game. Jump over to the special tab in the menu at the bottom of your screen. Specifically, it's in the Entertainment tab (If you can't spot it straightaway, don't sweat it. Peloton's software updates could be rolling out in waves. You'll get it sooner or later!) Just tap YouTube and you'll land on a page displaying Peloton's YouTube channel. Log into your YouTube account by signing in with your Google Account or just go as a guest. You'll be prompted to start a workout if you'd like your resistance, cadence, and output to be kept track of during your ride.
Why it's a thumbs up for Peloton users:
Over the years, I've lost my mojo for watching shows or movies while doing my cardio workouts. I feel I don't push hard enough when distracted, which is why I usually opt for classes or Lanebreak. But hey, if this fresh option encourages more people to hop on their bikes or treadmills, I'm all for it.
I tried out the feature this morning, logging into my Google account and searching for something that'd get me fired up. There are tons of spin classes available on YouTube, and I know folks who watch those while on non-Peloton bikes at home. While Peloton's classes designed for your specific machine are numero uno, there's now the option to watch different classes if you ever fancy a change.
Personally, I chose to play Lady Gaga's "Marry the Night" music video. It's a track I use a lot in my spin classes, but the video is something extra special to me. It functioned smoothly with no lag, the image was clear as a bell, and I could see my cadence and resistance at the bottom of the screen just like during a proper Peloton class. Listening to the song and watching the video actually had me bike harder than usual. I didn't even realize how fast or hard I was going or how many calories I burned until my end-of-workout review! The video on my screen really sucked me in.
Things to keep in mind:
This is an amazing feature if you want something other than a class, Lanebreak, or scenic ride, but bear in mind that you won't have any cues from pros while doing it unless you're watching a spin class on YouTube. I'd advise novices to take a few classes first to grasp proper form and technique (as an instructor, I worry about your safety!). Also, be mindful of YouTube binges. It's fun to ride for an extended period, but remember to stay hydrated, take breaks, and be careful not to overdo it. This isn't like plopping down on your couch for a YouTube binge – you could exhaust yourself without realizing it!
