Portugal Investment Case: MOBI.E Highlights Benefits for Chief Procurement Officers

In a significant move towards sustainable mobility, MOBI.E, Portugal's public electric vehicle (EV) charging network, has ensured that at least one charging station is available in each of the country's 308 municipalities. This extensive network, consisting of over 9,300 points across Portugal, has played a crucial role in making Portugal's EV ecosystem one of the most advanced in Southern Europe.

Transparency and accessibility are at the heart of MOBI.E's public company model. Stations connected to the MOBI.E network provide real-time information about the availability, enabled power, and use of chargers through their website. This encourages competition in the sector, allowing EV charging point operators (CPOs) to more effectively retain their customers and compete for users.

The MOBI.E management platform establishes a direct connection with the energy sector, allowing the deduction of energy consumed in electric mobility from the total supply, creating a specific electricity market for electromobility. This model simplifies the connection and power management of the stations, allowing them to better plan their investments.

Portugal's electric mobility market has seen a 66% increase in recharges on the MOBI.E network in August compared to the same period last year. This growth is mainly due to competitive advantages and facilities available to CPOs under the MOBI.E model.

The focus in Portugal's electromobility market is on high power charging stations. By the end of September 2024, approximately 1,762 fast charging stations and 252 ultra-fast charging stations were available, making up 37.8% of the total network.

Operators, under the MOBI.E model, are not required to bear high fixed costs of connecting to the power supply, such as grid connection costs. This allows them to install more charging stations at a lower cost. Moreover, CPOs in Portugal do not pay for peak demand charges, enabling them to install more high-capacity charging stations.

Energy marketers (eMSPs) in Portugal benefit from an expanded market where they can sell energy not only at public stations but also at private facilities. This business model benefits energy marketers by enabling them to sell energy at all charging stations.

Portugal's electric mobility market has grown significantly and is a reference model for many European countries, including Spain. MOBI.E's mission is to facilitate market development and ensure that electric mobility is an accessible option for everyone. By the end of September 2024, more than 4,264,000 charging sessions had been completed in Portugal.

As of the end of September 2024, a total of 5,209 publicly accessible stations and 9,124 available charging points have been established in Portugal. This extensive network, driven by MOBI.E's mission to serve as Portugal's public EV charging network backbone, is a significant step towards accelerating the development of the electric mobility market in Portugal.
