Prepare for an Update: Transition of Overdrive to Libby Scheduled for May 1, 2023

=========================================================================

With the transition from OverDrive to Libby, many users have questions about moving their wish lists and borrowing history. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process.

Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand that OverDrive and Libby use linked accounts. Your library card account, not the app itself, houses your borrowing history, holds, wish lists (tags), and preferences. Logging into Libby with the same library card number you used on OverDrive should grant you access to your existing history and wish lists automatically because Libby uses the same backend as OverDrive.

For users switching accounts or library cards, some libraries offer assistance to move your Libby/OverDrive account information (history, holds, wish lists) to a new or replacement library card number. You typically log into Libby with your new card first, then submit a transfer request through your library’s form or service.

However, before May 1, 2023, there was no separate manual export-import functionality for history or wish list data. Your best action was to continue using the same library card credentials and sign into Libby, which automatically synchronizes your account data from OverDrive.

If you wanted to preserve your history or wish lists before switching or losing access, you would need to manually document them by noting titles in your History and Wish List (tags) on OverDrive.com, taking screenshots or copying the title information, and manually re-adding any wish list items as tags in Libby after your account transfer or sign in.

Borrowed books and loans are linked with the library card and not transferable separately. The same goes for holds.

If you had a library card change or needed assistance, libraries often had forms or support lines to help move your Libby/OverDrive info to a new card, but this was library-specific.

In summary, to “transfer” your History and Wish Lists from OverDrive to Libby, you simply needed to log into Libby using your existing library card account before May 1, 2023. Manual export-import is not supported, so manually recording the information was necessary if you needed a backup. If your library changed your card number, you could request the library to move your account info for you after signing into Libby with your new credentials.

For Harris County Public Library users, staff is available to assist with the transition to Libby. Libby is the platform for accessing Harris County Public Library's ebooks and audiobooks. Once created or merged, your wish list tag will be found under the > tags section in Libby.

To import your wish list, go to the Sync Wish Lists notification. You can also create a new tag for your wish list in Libby. Upon signing in, you'll receive an in-app notification to import your wish list in Libby.
